Nobody’s Child-Sarah’s Story

Inspired by a true story…an African American author captures this emotional 1940s coming of age drama about, Sarah, a young White girl desperate to get away from her small-town life in Ohio. Her naïve decision to enter prostitution to earn quick money to fund her escape plan, leads to an affair with a suave, older, Black man (WALLACE). Pregnant, devastated, and alone, the faith instilled in her by her Catholic school education helps her stay strong and deepens her relationship with God.

What People are Saying …

  • We Want More

“This was an excellent story written in a vivid, detailed style that put us in 520 or the other places described in the book. The story is heartbreaking and angering in places where Sarah made bad decisions. She is indefatigable, to say the least. Three of us read it together out loud over a few nights and experienced it together. All the emotions. We want to know more about Sarah and Patty and what happened between the mansion on Brighton Road and the meeting at the train station in the blistering July sun.”

  • Excellent Read

“I thoroughly enjoyed Sarah's story. I loved that the author did not shy away form depicting the harsh realities of living in a brothel in the 1940's. While the reality of prostitution and abuse are clear so are the redemptive themes of faith and hope. The writer does a good job of balancing these themes. I recommend this book to anyone who loves period pieces and enjoys watching characters grow and develop.”

  • Amazing Character Development

“Nobody’s Child is such a well-developed story and captured my interest right from the very beginning. It was easy to imagine myself in the scenes with the characters—that’s how great of a storyteller Karen is. Also, I found myself empathizing with the different characters, but mostly with Sarah, the main character. For me, this book was definitely an emotional roller coaster—I felt hopeful, discouraged, sad, angry, and inspired. Hopeful that things would work out favorably for Sarah, discouraged when she felt discouraged, sad from imagining the unfortunate things she had to go through, angry at some of the characters’ behaviors, and inspired when Sarah’s resolve and determination kept her going in the face of difficulties.

I have nothing but positive to say about this book and the author. The character development is AMAZING. It was really easy to imagine actually knowing these people and understanding what they’ve gone through and how that’s affected them. I loved the unpredictability because it threw me for a loop when I thought I had a part of the story figured out, and then realized I wasn’t even close. Most importantly, stories are meant to be felt and experienced, which this one absolutely delivers on. Nobody’s Child is perfect for anyone who appreciates superb writing and intimate storytelling!”

  • A Must Read

“I had the opportunity to read this book during what was supposed to be a leisure way of passing free time but I had a hard time putting it down. The authors writing style had me so mentally engaged almost transforming my entire mind state to another time period. The characters were so relatable it was easy to form an attachment whether you agreed or disagreed with them or not. I love books where you feel you have taken something from it like morals or food for thought and this book left me feeling extremely satisfied. It's a must read!”

  • A Very Good Read

“I really loved the ending. Bittersweet.”

  • This Story Grabs Your Intellect and Your Heart.

“Description gLet me begin with this statement - I love a great story. And, all of our lives are filled with “great stories.” K Hoskins invites us into the life of Sarah - with drama, dreams, and the reality that we all make mistakes trying to move from where we are, to where we think we need to be. We identify with Sarah and the characters that surround her life - the compassion of “Sam,” the perceived coldness of “Mrs. Betty,” the friendship of Loretta and Barbara. We hurt when Sarah hurts, hope when she hopes, and ultimately walk the journey with her as she discovers “life isn’t always a fairy tale.” But we celebrate what makes life worth living is the presence of a forgiving God who takes us just the way we are. Well done K Hoskins. A++++. Would love “to see the movie.” And there has to be a part two - does Sarah ever make it back onto the path toward her dream?”
